A short history
Rakaia was founded in 1856. The first bridge opened in 1873 and the growing railway network made travel safer and drew settlers to the area’s farming opportunities.
The present road bridge opened in 1939. When constructed, it was the longest bridge in the Southern Hemisphere.
Memorial heritage
The Rakaia Memorial Community Hall remains an important community venue and memorial building.
